The Folk 'n' Word Festival

The Folk 'n' Word Festival was a remarkable evening of acoustic music and spoken words on Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at the Green Rooster Coffeehouse, 6 Institute Road, Worcester, Mass.

The Folk ’n’ Word Festival brought together for the first time on one stage more than a dozen of the area’s finest poets, wordsmiths and musicians for a magical evening of spoken words and acoustic music. The show lasted four hours, with each poet or musician getting about 10 minutes (though, with few exceptions, they went long).

More traditional contemporary poets such as the acclaimed John Hodgen shared the stage with slam poets of national stature, including Tim Mason and Bill and Sou MacMillan.

Spoken word artists David Nader and Tom Ewart performed their work, as did the award-winning Karen Hart, 16-year-old Corrina Bain, and Joe Fusco, recently named Worcester’s best poet by Worcester Magazine.

Local singer-songwriters playing between the spoken word segments included Valerie & Walter Crockett, Chuck & Mud, Mike Duffy, Paul Della Valle, Bob Jordan and Robyn Tarantino.

We raised $1000 for Why Me Inc., an organization that helps children with life-threatening illnesses and that has been a great help to our own family.

In the process of publicizing the event, we decided to put some of the poets' work on our website and to link to those who already had web pages up. Now that it's over, we're going to keep those pages alive. And if the poets or wordsmiths want us to add more, we'll be happy to.
